Renting a car in Saigon..?

It is illegal to drive a car or ride a motorbike in Vietnam unless you hold a Vietnam drivers license. Foreigners living in Vietnam permanently have difficulty in getting one. Of the foreigners I know who hold VN licenses, each of them tell me they had to pay a bribe to get one. That is of course not saying a foreigner can't get one legally, but I know of none who have done so.

As others have said, no rental company will rent you a car, unless they provide the driver. The fact is that many foreigners who get caught driving or riding who can't bribe or talk their way out of it, or have a police officer that uses some discretion, will see the car or bike seized by police. The person renting or loaning that vehicle will have to pay a huge fine to get it back.

I know that late last year, police in Mui Nei were grabbing every foreigner they saw riding a motor bike and seizing it.

A buddy of mine living in Saigon last year told me he had rented a late model Honda car for a week from a local guy with intent to drive around in the Mekong Delta in air-conditioned comfort, only to get pulled over by police and explain why he was driving a stolen motor car and having no VN license. The guy who rent the car to him was not the owner in the first place. He spent the night in jail as a result.

Bottom line is if you want to travel by car, take a cab or hire the car with the driver supplied. Either way, it is not that expensive.

You won't be allowed to drive. No car company would rent a Vietnamese a car (they provide a driver) and trust me you don't want to. You CAN rent a motorcycle but I would NOT recommend it...

i do not believe you can rent a car to drive yourself anywhere in viet nam.. and outside of the occasional Jeep ,iv'e only seen 1 convertible in the past 10 years. you can rent motor bikes and car w drivers all over viet nam but you cant drive a car yourself .. and no disrespect , but if you got into even a small accident you'd think you where crazy for attempting to drive there.. that said there are more and more tourists renting motor bikes each year.. you should be VERY experienced before you do so .. anyway if you can afford to rent a Mercedes you should be able to afford a chauffeur with your car

As mentioned you can not hire a car without a driver in Vietnam . But to hire one with driver is much easier plus you will have a cheap tour guide , just look after your driver and it will pay dividend's . You will maybe find that you will be better of doing it that way as there as your driver will be able to get a better rate for any purchase's that you want while traveling .
p.s driving is not really a good idea anyhow as if you are in any accident you are the one who will be held liable no matter what.

I don't think you can rent a car there. People will drive you around. I just came back from Saigon very recently, and people will offer to let you ride a motorbike (not recommended), but there is about one billion of those things on the road...so if you were in a car you would be the king of the road, but I don't think you can rent a car there unless you're a Vietnamese citizen.
