Safe as houses. 12 days never enough to tour a country like Vietnam, but certainly enough to take in all the main attractions and probably convince you to return...

Safe - Yes, no problem

12 days - nowhere near enough. Spend as long as you can. If you've only got 12 days then stay in the south of the country (if you're going in winter). See Saigon (HCMC), and then up the coast to Nha Thrang, Hue, Hoi An etc.

That will be a good 12-day trip.

viet nam is a country not war! im from vietnam and move here aout 4 years ago!so u are safe and sound...its beautiful there...the beach are nice and not so crowed like in thailand, people more friendy, stuffs are cheaper, 12 days is not enough but if u can flight from saigon to hanoi or the other way round then you be fine, hanoi is very nice,u'll like it...saigon-im from there-is more lively, nice bars,restaurant,market...you deff have to go to allez boo bar...its so cool... anyway its many things to do and see,if u want more info about my city then u can email me,i will be more than happy to tell u...have a nice time..

I'm from England & have been to many countries, and I can honestly say that the 2 places I feel least safe are the UK and the USA. Vietnam is fantastic and great fun on your own because you meet more people that way. 12 days might be pushing it a bit. The longer the better.

Well if you it were a female I would probably say no, they are always targets by thugs because they can't defend themselves. Just make sure to wear casual attire...if you wear expensive clothing your asking to get jumped. The general rule in 3rd world countries is don't wear or carry anything (expensive cameras, watches, etc.) with you that you wouldn't stolen.

Vietnam is a very friendly and safe place for tourists, in the major cities as well as in the rural country. A 12-day trip might not give you enough time to see the whole country; however, it should not prevent you from seeing most of the popular destinations. Depend on your taste and what you are looking for, here are my general recommendations:

* 2-day: fly into Hanoi, the capital city in the North. There are many historical places and pagodas/lakes to visit, and the city is also full of people and good restaurants.

* 1-day: tour to Ha Long Bay. Here you should take a half-day boat tour to the caves. There are two popular and beautiful caves there. You don't have to stay overnight in Ha Long if time is limited. In that case, just take the bus back to Ha Noi and on to your next destination.

* 1-day: in Hue, the old capital of Vietnam, with also a few historical places to see.

* 2-day: in Da Nang & Hoi An. If you can get to Hoi An the day before full-moon day (14th of every lunar calendar), you must stay overnight in Hoi An. The city exhibits one of the most interesting event every such night.

* 2-day: in Nha Trang, with its beautiful beaches. Here I highly recommend a stay @ Vin Pearl, a resort on an island by itself.

* 4-day: in Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh City) and the southern cities' tour (Mekong River Tours.) Saigon has changed significantly since the pre-war time; however, it is still an experience to tour around the city. I highly recommend a tour on motorcycles and also on cyclos :-). The Mekong River Tours should give you a taste of life in rural part of southern Vietnam.

There is your 12-day trip. Enjoy!
