Tension between Vietnam and US?

The battle of Khe Sanh was mentioned during Obamas speech... why was that worth mentioning? Is there tension during present times between Vietnam and the US?
A best answer will be chosen, thanks!

The brief mention of “Khe Sanh” in Obama’s inaugural speech has become rather controversial to some. You’re asking why this was mentioned, and I’m wondering why this should be an issue at all, because I believe this is being over analyzed.

If you must have an explanation, then I believe Obama was trying to touch as many people’s hearts and minds as he could in a relatively brief speech. Mentioning Khe Sanh along with Concord and Gettysburg, Normandy is Obama’s attempt to demonstrate respect for those who served and died in Vietnam as being equally important as those who served and died in other important battles for the freedom of our country. I didn’t vote for Obama, but I have to say that he made a darn good inauguration speech. Whether or not he is a man of his word has yet to be determined.

As for the second part of your question…

I believe the relationship between the U.S. and Vietnam has never been better. As Rick M tried to explain, Vietnam has normal trade status with the U.S., which is what used to be called favorite nation status. Believe it or not, the Vietnamese people LOVE Americans. American Vietnam Veterans are honored in Vietnam and are probably treated better than in the U.S. As an American, I feel safer traveling through the deepest parts of Vietnam than I would travel just a mile into Tijuana, Mexico.

Long story short: There is no tension between Vietnam and the United States.

Wow, you caught me there. I was going to deny that until i just looked at his speech.

I believe that he was referring to the lives that have been lost in the American wars.

Vietnam was given the in to the WTO a few years back.

Prior to that. Vietnam was given -- and don't quote me on this.-- most favoured nation status from the US

Perhaps someone else can give more info.

Oh. In answer to your question. There is very little if no tension between the two countries.

North Vietnam cheated on the war. They signed the Peace Treaty Will and still attacked South Vietnam Army. Is that the main lesson you guys learn for Vladimir Lenin. if it was. That's suck. B/c in this world, it only trust is accepted, my friend.

Izzy_Cool
The only tension between the US and Vietnam comes when the US State department issues its Human Rights Reports and bashes Vietnam unfairly.

Ok, also whenever some idiot congressman / woman in California listens to one of the Viet Tan people and opens trheir mouth on national TV.

Unbelievable.

Listen, G-d's honest truth : I have lived in Vietnam for 17 years and during all those years, I have NEVER heard an "anti-American" remark, nor been made to feel uncomfortable at ANY TIME.

I wish I could say the same thing back home in the US.

Mojave Dave is correct, Vietnam is the SAFEST country in the world.

The so called most powerful country in the world, took 15 years to get beat up big time by the third world country of Vietnam.
The U.S has not learn to butt out, still, how many times do they need their butts kicked.
