Traveling to Vietnam Questions?

After college, I'm planing on going to Vietnam and live for several year. What process do i have to go through, what can i do for a living, and is it safe to live over there as a US citizen? Are there any problems that I might encounter? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Additional Details
Well, I've been to Vietnam 3 times already. I'll graduate with a bs in microbiology. Is there anything I can do with that degree? Is it a good idea to get an MBA?And will i lose my US citizenship if i stay for a long time?

Have you ever been to Vietnam?
I am living there now for 4 years and working at a hotel.
Bute its not always easy, so before moving there you should go for a vacation.
Is it safe? Yes, for sure - but if you have still ideas in your mind that Americans and Vietnamese are enemies, hey, why did you decide to live there?
Problems?
Well, maybe you´ll miss some Western organisation structures - things are working different here and biggest problem will be to find a job.
Expat jobs are cut back at the moment as the ffinance crisis hits Vietnam and its tourism as well.
So - think about it and please, dont dream the "being an English teacher dream" - all expats with no skills think they can teach English to Vietnamese...these days are over!

before you commit to years in a country you know nothing about you might try visiting there for 1-2 months. do that and you will be able to answer all your other question most satisfactory yourself.. yes it is safe.. job opportunities would depend on your skills, teaching, entrepreneur, hotel staff, endless opportunities all depending on your qualifications.. what would you like to do ?...

Hi Asker, You have received several good responses to your question. Since you have been to Vn several times, I would suggest you look at a Vietnamese job board such as Vietnamworks.com.
You will quickly discover that the pay scale over here for new graduates is pitiful. They do have some limited opportunities and it is a growing field, but you would be paid much better in Korea or Japan.
The unfortunate truth is that being an English teacher is one of the best paying "professional" jobs in Vn.

You can never "lose" your American citizenship unless you swear allegiance to a foreign government and renounce America.

What hell ! what do you think about us? We are Vietnamese and we never ever think you or other foreigner get any problemt if want to living and working in Vietnam. We always welcom. You are USA not diffirent with Vietnamese , Philippin , Thailand. We never care about that, Because we are human
- Let me tell you 1 job you can work in Vietnam : Now lot fo travel agent open, they need foreigner staff for selling tour trips, so you can ask them for a job. With you, they will give you very high salary.
What do you think?

whatevs..
okay... wait til you graduate with your bs, then decide then whether or not you want to live there for several yrs. Before getting a degree in something, i suggest you look at at what jobs are available with that degree. If you don't even know what a bs in microbiology could get you, i don't think it's a good idea to think about going over to Vietnam. I have a feeling that you're still quite far away from obtaining this degree, so in the meantime, just sit back and schooling will teach you everything you need to know, or ways in which you can get help in order to answer all your questions. Oh yeah, and i do suggest getting an MBA, but that's just my personal advice.

Vietnam's great and all, but i would never go there to live for several years. I was born there and left when i was 7 years old, and then on i've been back 3 times as well. Everytime i come back to the U.S., i get SICK, really really SICK. Find out what YOU want to do most, then base your decisions around that. If you wanna be a biologist and work in Vietnam, then focus on that and do research about that in Vietnam, or before graduating, take another trip back and do a little scouting to find out if or any, place is looking to hire someone like you w/ your degree. It's a long process. Be prepared. And i'm not sure if the pay is great or not for obvious reasons. Good luck to you.

Do you have any relatives currently living in Vietnam? If so, talking to them might help. Vietnam is completely different than the US.
There you have to blend in with the people, like learning how to ride the motorbike for the first time. They eat mostly rice but now they offer KFC. You then have to find a place to live and make sure that your college degree will be accepted widely there.
