Forget the raincoat unless you are a masochist. The humidity around the southern areas (Saigon, etc) is about 200% (lol). Bring or buy an umbrella and plenty of clothing. Nothing dries at that time of year and although I have seen electric clothes dryers in the larger department stores, I have never seen a laundromat nor do I know any Viet who owns a dryer.
If you are staying in one of the more western style hotels, they may have laundry service. You should check that out.
The good news is that you can buy a complete set of clothing for less than ten dollars usd.
You should probably try to avoid Saigon. Some of the streets have serious flooding problems. And although I dearly love that city, it's not at the top of my list for cleanliness. Driving a motorbike or walking after a rainstorm can be down right gross.
So, for what it's worth, I'd head out to the beaches or mountains. And learn to love the rain :-)

No, don't worry about the rainy season.
It is rainy season all over Asia.. it doesn't stop people from coming.
Is it inconvenient for me to take my daughter to skating class in a storm? (without a car) Yes..
It is obviously not the prime season to go, but if you ahve a good attitude about it, no problem. We just look at it as a chance for the land to get hydrated.
You should pack a BREATHABLE rain jacket for your child. (thi is NOT a cheap plastic one that sticks to her skin and makes her clammy.. she will not want to wear it.. it will be raining AND humid)
A lot of people high-tail it back to the states when school lets out here, but we always stick around. I think Asia is lovely in the rain and the sun.

I am not sure what country your other resondends are from. Vietnam is hot and relatively dry right now and through July. I live in Hoian which is about half way up the coast by Danang its been real warm actually hot but little rain and not to humidl I was in Saigon last week picking up some cargo/ It rained in the afternoon every day but it wasn't bad and not to humid. Hanoi gets really muggy and it can be oppressive. All in all I don't think that this is something you have to worry to much about. Throw away rain coats are everywhere and cost about a buck. Great sunsets and amazing beaches. You will have a blast and come away thinking that Vietnam is the best place to visit in the world. Please come by Hoian. Its rated as one of the top twenty five places to visit in the world.

You can buy on land ( anywhere at the market, supermarket, tourist spots ...) the rain coat ( cheap, around 1USD).
You can check next 4 days weather at this link

Don't worry! and enjoy your trip!
