your never realy alone in viet nam. not if you dont want to be . the people there, tourist, ex-pats as well as the viet nameses are extreamly friendly and approachable... i'll be there myself shortly ... keep posting and yeah maybe we could meet for a beer...

Sure, very safe place. Just be careful at Saigon, there are some pickpockets around very touristic places as Nguyên Hue street, Dong Khoi etc... but still ok for travelling alone.
For the southern beaches, Phu Quoc Island is the best place
