Vietnamese 1st writing system was not similar to Chinese, it actually was Chinese. It means they spoke Vietnamese, but when it comes to writing, they used Chinese.
Then the "chữ NĂ´m" that the person above me mentioned was developed. It looked similar to Chinese but symbolized Vietnamese words.
The writing system we're now using was invented just about 2 years ago. And thank God it uses the alphabet lol.

i do believe they used chinese like characters..which are still found on temples , greeting cards , signs,calendars, anything formal... no translator here..sorry.........
