Vietnam Bargain?

When go shopping in Vietnam, is there a limitation in bargaining or pretty much we can bargain at any places?

The places that claim they won't bargain, or put up signs saying that they won't bargain, are merely creating a ruse to get more money out of tourists. Notice the "We Do Not Bargain" signs are in English and not in Vietnamese.

Some places, such as the department stores, supermarkets and malls, will not price haggle. But you should always haggle with independent Vietnamese merchants. It's an insult to a Vietnamese merchant if you do not haggle with them. The list prices are usually pretty good, but you should always try to haggle for a better price. However, they do try to get more out of tourists and foreigners than they do with the natives, and that's the secret of getting the best prices for stuff in Vietnam.

Have a trusted native Vietnamese friend or your tour guide haggle for you. If you don't have such resources available, don't be shy about haggling for the best prices possible or walk away from the merchant if they're unreasonable. Paying a substantial amount more than necessary for an item will drive up prices for the natives when they try to buy the same item. Don't do it for you, but do it for the natives who aren't as fortunate as you are.

Ong Jon - You can borrow my wife the next time you go shopping in Vietnam. She's the best haggler I've ever known.

they'll tell you right off if the price is set. there are often signs in such places... but most places are willing to bargan fairly if you are ..............well dan,... i'm speachless.... thats a "hell av" an offer!..... but i do pretty good on my own... besides half the stuff i buy i dont need , i just do it 'cause i like barganing... "cha gia" or is it "tra gia "??

u can't bargain at any mall....

Tuấn-VPY
It is said that Vietnamese traders often sell at a higher price to foreigners than to Vietnamese. However we don't know exactly the limit of a the price increase.. Well, I think you should bargain at 70% of the value.. then try to keep it.!

Hi there, if you wants to buy anything in Vietnam, try to change some Dong as this will help you to save, cos in Ho Chin Minh, usually the retailer will try to sell you in US$ which is much more expensive and the best way is try to bargain down as much as 70% and if not, you still can get the same thing along the way. Only those tourist places, you will be charge more expensive, but once outside those city, you may get thing around discount proce of 60-70%.
