Jane Fonda, an actress daughter of Henry Fonda, was filmed and photographed sitting in an anti-aircraft gun in North Vietnam, actually laughing, at the same time that that same gun was used (not at that specific minute) to shoot at American airplanes during the Vietnam War. Many, most, if not ALL Americans thoiught that she was foolish; that she inadvertently (or on purpose) let her be used as a propaganda tool against her fellow Americans by the Communist government of North Vietnam. Hence, a "Jane Fonda" is a traitor. People, especially Vietnam vets, liked to say I'm "not fond of Jane" but it was said like I'm "not 'fonda' Jane." She actually admitted, decades later, that she was foolish. Most people felt that her apology was too little, too late.
Kent State, an Ohio college, had a student demonstration in May, 1970. Nervous soldiers fired tear gas at the UNARMED students, then opened fire on the crowd with real bullets, killing several students. I believe that the Ohio governor exonerated the soldiers of any wrong-doing. But it was the beginning of strong demonstrations and marches, which lasted until the end of the war several years later. |
