i'm a female & wishes to go for a free & easy to vietnam. Will it be easy for me to move around? Is it safe? I don't want to join a tour group. Most likely, I will be travelling alone.

It's not safe, there are robbers and everything waiting for you. You need 2 or more people to go with you.

It's as safe as any place on this earth, perhaps even more so. I personally know young females (in their 20's) who have traveled solo around the world, including Vietnam and who have enjoyed the experience and thought Vietnam was among the safest countries to do so. I have also come across females traveling alone while I was in Vietnam and they expressed the same opinions. It's also easy to get around by taxis, buses, trains and planes.

What most of them have done is to stay in youth hostels throughout Vietnam. They meet other travelers there and share experience on their travels. Sometimes, they may travel together to the next destination if their interests coincide...Nobody has told me they had any troubles traveling throughout Vietnam from North to South, from the largest cities to the remotest mountain villages...

From my own experience and that of countless other travelers to Vietnam including some female solo travelers, Vietnam is among the safest countries, if not the safest, to visit. It's easy to get around and the costs are so low for the great quality and quantity you get for your money. There're many beautiful and historic sights, the food is the best this side of heaven and the people are so generous, friendly and helpful.

Go, explore and enjoy. You won't regret it.

Tom T as usual is correct. I have travelled asia extensively(as well as many other areas) and Vietnam is the safest country for tourists (men and women) I have ever been to. You're much more likely to have trouble with a fellow tourist than you are with a Viet national. The only problem I have heard of in Saigon is snatch and run robberies. Be wary of wearing gold chains/expensive jewlery and don't keep valuables in a handbag.
I have never known of anyone who was robbed but I've read in the Vietnam Times that it happens.
Rest assured that Viets would rather steal from other Viets. The government is incredibly harsh for crimes against visitors. A 10 or 20 year sentence at hard labor is not uncommon for assaulting a tourist.
Likewise, death is the usual sentence for crimes against children (with the regretable exception of Gary Glitter).
I have since settled down and gotten married in Vn. I plan on "retiring" there as soon as possible. My last visit was in Nov, so the info should be current.

Ok I admit, I didn't travel alone in Vietnam, but I did wander around by myself many times when I managed to ditch my bf :) Personally, I think Vietnam's ok for a solo female traveller, much easier than say India or Egypt. It's no more/less safe than you want it to be. It depends on your previous travel experience and what you already know I guess? We travelled around either by overnight train or plane, if you take the train go for the first class, sleeps 4 and the doors lock. We booked a trip through Sinh Cafe who were fantastic, reliable and cheap. There's a couple of them around, just make sure you get the *real* one. (More fakes than you could believe.) Do some research online, take a look at what you want to do, ultimately, only you can answer whether you think it's "safe" enough to travel alone. In my humble opinion, you should be fine.

I think nothing is big problem if you always take precaution, sometimes we like to go alone, when you are anywhere, you should show you are friendly and make some friends to chat, they will give you lots of information, we cannot predict anywhere is safe or unsafe, always take precaution

I took a big vacation to Vietnam two years ago. I think it would be best to have tour guide, you dont need to go in a group, you can sign up for just you, and you get to hand select the places you want to go, thats what my family did. I dont think you should go alone, but if you do, traveling from city to city, you can take buses, which speed at like 90 mph, pretty unsafe, and watch out for pickpocketers, and dont cross the street without looking. It's not that easy going through Vietnam alone.

I've been to Vietnam in the last couple of years and plan to go again soon. It is pretty safe , and the people are very generous especially if you consider what they have. If you go you should catch up on some simple Vietnamese phrases and should have someone who knows the area or you could get lost easily.
Trust me you dont want to drive in HCM (Ho Chi Minh ) its crazy.
The cars and trucks get the center of the road and the thousands of motorcycles and bikes get the left and right sides.

Good luck.

I don't think it is safe for a female to travel alone in any country. Why don't you try and make a friend there on the internet first.
