Don't drink or smoke but everyday items like bread and milk have risen quite a bit since I arrived back just over 6 year ago. Bread rolls have trippled in price 500d to 1500d. I use Tablecape long life milk from Tasmania. That's doubled in price and is now 32'000. I've rented 5 houses here and my electicity bill is usually around 1 million per month. That always depends on how much I use the aircon. Probably 2-3 hrs at night. Water excess is cheap and garbage collection is not much more. TV service is cheap to expensive depending on what you want. My internet connection is 630'000 a month. Drinking water has come down. 10'000 dong for a 21 ltre container(delivered.) You'd probably be better off looking at a hotel room until you find your feet. Most of the above is included in your rent. You can bring a 6 month supply of medications with you. Just get an authority letter from your doctor. There is a 2 tier pricing system here. Once you've been here a while you'll work it all out. |

Beer = on Average... 15,000 dong for 1 can of beer. But as you head to restaurants you pay around 25 000 for Hanoi beer.
Cigs = around 16,000 dong/pack. You have to bargain though ... some places sell for 20,000 dong
bread.. you can buy baguettes at around 6,000 dong for 4 baguettes at street vendors.
cheap places start at around $250/mon for a room |

I am a regular visitor to Vietnam and spend most of the time in HCMC (Saigon). I was last there only a matter of weeks ago.
I am not sure where previous answer is based, but I don't pay as much as that.
This is what I pay.....
1 beer - 6,000 to 12,000 dong per can at convenience stores and street vendors. Double that price at cafes and bars. Then there is the 'home brew' style beer (bia hoi) you can get as cheap as 3,000 a litre.
2 cigarettes - from 8,000 dong and upwards depending on the brand.
3 bread - I assume a loaf of bread, on that I am not sure. On bread rolls around 5,000 dong each.
4 milk - local bottle milk is risky, could be full of bacterium as it is not always pasteurized. Safest is UHT milk in a carton. I don't know the price at all.
5 cheap 1 bed condo furnished - from around $250 USD per month, but they are scarce and normally in bad locations. You can get a very decent furnished and serviced apartment from around $350 a month, but most are over $450. To buy one for yourself, anything from $10,000 and upwards.
6 water for condo
included with apt rental
7 electricity for condo
included with apt rental
8 butter
don't know
any other every day item you know of e g western medicines
medicines - about the same as you would pay at home for prescription medicines. For off the shelf stuff like cough medicines, about 30 % cheaper than you would pay at home. |
