@Hanoi_Babe: No way! you don't need A BAG to carry $500 converted into VND. Just 17 notes of VND500,000 is not that much. A purse will do.

Never cause yourself problem by using US DOLLAR in the market. They just accept in big shopping malls. Even if they accept US Dollar, the exchange rates will be low.

By law it´s not allowed to use US$ on rate sheets.....

BUT - in the Cities and the tourist places you can always pay in US$ - but dont use big bills as there is always a problem with change.
VND is the currency.
Better to have this for the day to day things, food, taxi, drinks...
Big amounts, so if you want to do big shopping at the tailor etc. better to negotiate in $.Why?
Well, 1 $ is around 17.000 VND-somew suits and shirts for 500$ - you have to carry Vietnam Dong in a bag to pay that!
If you keep the receipt of the bank from exchange - you can change Dong back to $ at the airport.

I think they use us money but if they don't you can go to the nearest bank and exchange us money for their money trust me you can exchange money everywhere
