Vietnam is easily cheaper than Thailand. As for medicines, things like that are hard to find in places like South East Asia, but they are there due to a number a settled ex pats. Try ex pat forums on the net, as for visas get in touch with your local embassy.

On a personal note, I'd recommend Vietnam over Thailand, I found the people a lot more friendly and hospitable. Apart from the islands on Thailand which are very good! Depends if you want to surround yourself with ex pats or locals but I'd say go Viet Nam!

hehe all I know is that in Thailand they try to rip you off all the time :) 200 baht cab ride what a jerk! lol

I hear sometimes people take foreigners hostage in Thailand... actually, I've seen it on TV. I would go to Vietnam first. It will be likely cheaper there too.

Thailand is much cheaper. Its more of a tourist destination, and you would think it would be expensive, but the asian fiancial crisis started in Thailand so their baht was greatly affected. Thailand is much more fun. Its not all touristy, you can easily find quiet uncharted spots too. Vietnams got some cool spots like Halong Bay. But Thailands got much more scenic things to do plus partying things. Much more diverse too when it comes to scenery. People are friendlier towards foreigners in Thailand too. People voted for the best cities in the world 2008 in Travel and Leisure Magazine and Bangkok won. I think other areas of Thailand are much better, like the islands in the south, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi.

Which one is better to live in depends on different people's point of views (about what they expect) but I would say things in Vietnam are cheaper to buy and there are plenty of pharmacies along the streets in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) where you can find medicines with very reasonable price. Hospitals in Thailand is perhaps better but Vietnam also have international hospitals (with high-skills foreigner doctors, too). Getting work-permit in Vietnam is easy.

Vietnam also have more places to choose to live. If you like something like Bangkok, you can consider to live in Ho Chi Minh City where things are pretty much similar with shopping, nightlife ... If you like a more pleasant life, Hanoi is a good choice with culture, foods ... Besides, Vietnam is much safer than Thailand.

For me, I would choose Vietnam over Thailand.

Thailand is pretty cheap right now because of the problems they've been having. Vietnam is pricing itself off the market. Prices are skyrocketing and the return rate is less than 5%. With medicines you have to be careful. You can bring a 6 month supply with you as long as you have a doctor's authorization. Without it you could lose them on entry but I haven't had a problem bringing in stuff I can't get here.'You have to be careful buying from the local pharmicies. Check the dates and packaging very closely. Thailand have some world class hospitals so you shouldn't have any problems there. You can get a 6 month tourist visa for Vietnam. Just ask the travel agent to organize it for you, or ring the consulate. There is no requirment when entering Vietnam to have a return ticket. A good Thai expat site is www.stickmanbangkok.com

Thailand is cheaper, that's for sure. It depense on what kind of western medicine you are looking for but general it is available in Thailand and cheaper too than in the west.
Visa for thailand upon arrival for 30 days and for vietnam you need to apply for a visa (30 days valid), as far as I know as well possible on arrival but takes some time and you have to have a return ticket.
