1. Americans were defeated in Vietnam because of the concept of limited warfare. (political issue). The US should have moved troops into Thailand and swept through Laos into North Vietnam and cut off the Ho Chi Minh trail. You can't win a war by remaining static.

2. Wars cost money and lives and unless you can fully explain in plain language the reasons why the fight is necessary and what the ultimate outcome is, there is no reason to maintain a war and no reason for people to support a war. (Social Issue)

3. Ho Chi Minh was fighting for a cause, freedom and liberty for the people of Vietnam. The US was fighting to destablize the region, thereby protecting America's long term interest. Since at this point most of Asia including Vietnam is peaceful and stable and although they might be communist in name they are capitalist in fact. So in the long term we won.

You can say the Americans were defeated in Vietnam if that is your take on that war. The fact is we quit due to the will to proceed. The military won all military engagements in Vietnam, it was the politicians in Washington that lacked the will to follow through to victory.

The so called domino theory of communist expansion was the order of the day when that war started. It should be noted that no country has gone communist since is a victory of sorts.

Beyond all of the above, I believe that Ho Chi Minh was fighting a war of reunification. He was successful because we quict.

We wasn't defeated. we withdraw.
the Communist is the main reason. Most of the protest in Washington 1968 was created by Communist Party in U.S. and other reasons are those Old Guy had answer.

By the way,
Salute to you, great American Veterans.

1. Politicians, 2. Limited Warfare due to Politicians, 3. Bias Liberal Media just like Iraq. We were not physically defeated in Vietnam. We were withdrawn on Nixon's orders, which were premature, and got tens of thousands of Montanyards, Cambodians, Laotians, and South Vietnamese Civilians and Soldiers slaughtered by the Communist Forces. We lost over Fifty-Thousand troops in 10 years.
