Vietnam tailers, advice much appreciated...? |
Hi there, My b/f and I are off to Vietnam on the 13th of this month and we have my brothers wedding to attend on the 28th Dec so we were wanting to get a suit and dress made in Vietnam. I have pictures off the net of the dress I would like, is this enough or should I buy a pattern? And what about the suit? Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated, thank you :-) |

My good friend Ong Jon has given you some comments about Hoi An that I will elaborate on. Hoi An has become internationally renowned for tailored clothing in Vietnam, and you will likely receive an answer to go to Hoi An for your tailoring. You can throw a rock in any direction and hit a tailor shop if you’re in Hoi An’s old town area. What most people, including the Vietnamese, don’t realize is most of the tailors in Hoi An have been there for less than three years and came from other parts of the country. Long story short – Hoi An is a tourist trap for tailored clothing, but certainly not the only place to find a good tailor in Vietnam.
I’ve had four complete suits and four additional dress pants tailored in Vietnam. I also own several suits purchased or tailored in the U.S. - including two Armani suits. My suits and dress pants from Vietnam are much better than any of my American (or Italian) suits and at a fraction of the cost. The suits were completed within days and fit much better than my American tailored suits.
How to get the best tailored clothes will depend a little on where you’re at and a lot on whom you know. If you’re in Hanoi, there is a block in Hoan Kiem District that sells nothing but fabric. Any fabric you can imagine is sold there and sold very cheap. You will want to go there to find the fabric for your dress and the suit. If you’re not in Hanoi, then you will have to depend on the fabric available from the tailor or find a fabric store, which a good tailor will refer you to.
The tailor you should use is someone you are referred to by trusted friends or family in Vietnam. Get referrals for a few tailors and carefully check their workmanship to choose the tailor you want. The tailors will expect you to do this, and it’s an insult to the better ones if you don’t go through this ritual. Cost will vary depending on the tailor and material, but the following estimate should get you in the ballpark on prices:
Complete tailored suit: $80 - $150
Ao Dai: $40 - $150
Woman’s Dress: $50 - $200
You need to be specific on the design styles you desire as most of the tailors in Vietnam are accustomed to Asian styles. You may end up with something that looks cool in Vietnam but dorky in the U.S. if you don’t.
It appears that you’re in a time of the essence, which can be met by the right tailor and the right incentives. I had three suits completed in less than three days in Saigon, so I believe you will have enough time to get your clothes done between the time you arrive and the wedding. Most tailors will expedite your order without additional cost if you’re pushy about needing it immediately. However, money speaks louder than words, which could be what you need to convince the tailor to get things done faster. Make sure to bug the tailor short of pissing them off until your clothes are completed.
Have a great trip! |

my understanding is hoi an does the best work .. though i've seen some pretty "crappy stuff come out of their shops.. some places send their work out to a "factory/ work shop"... shop around , pick out great fabric and go to a place that does work on the premises.. wherether it be hoi an or anyplace other else... mans suit in hoi an can be done in 2days fot $30us..paterns would probably help , but they will meassure you up.. alow time for "re-fitting"...chuc vui ve... |

Go to Hoi An, but don´t get the thing at on eof the tailors in the main street - they are kind of ripp off.
But still - if you want nice fabrique and good quality, you should still plan $ 150 for the suit - the dress depending on the amount of silk you´ll need.
It takes 1 day, then fitting, again fixing - done! |

You can have a dress made for you in VN, but your boy friend suit. I refer he buys in US. It looks very ugly if he has it made in VN. It's just my opinion.
Have a good trip |

If you want buy a suit from a tailer in vietnam. it's take 1month
Better you buy it in the shop - you can tell them fix a few thing so that it fit you best (it's free) |
