I have been going to this nail salon once every 2-3 months and there is this lady that is sooo nice to me and her whole family is there and works there. I just wanted to know more about it. But, I don't want to know about the past history and wars. :|

Just ask them the next time you're there, I guarantee they won't even mention the war. Americans associate Viet Nam with war, not the Vietnamese.

What is Vietnam like today?

Well, 17 years ago I counted 10 cars and 200 motorbikes in Hanoi.
Today, there are a million motorbikes, thousands of BMW's, Benzes and even a Lamborghini running around.

KFC's pop up every few kilometres or so.

Almost everyone has a mobile phone.
Farmers use the Internet to market their crops and get information on cultivation practices.

Vietnamese kids dye their hair all sorts of colours and the girls finally discovered their own sexuality...pity the poor men, we don't stand a chance or surviving their charms now.

Incomes have increased ten-fold and one local business magazine published a list of the 100 richest people in the country and these people were worth $50 - 150 million dollars each.

Nice eh?

Vietnam has a lot of fashion magazines which show 100000% more skin than it did in 1992! Lots of fashion shows and the local TV is getting better.

If you want to know more, come on over. You'll love it!

I agree only 50% with Izzy's reply. Sure there is progress but I have seen Hanoi and surely you don't see things so obvious as you mentioned. Yes it is growing but don't forget what is happening now in Vietnam. 26% inflation is not a fun thing to talk about. Also, things are not only bad in Hanoi area they are also bad in HCMC. International exposer for most Vietnamese is still an issue. Seeing something and living it is different, and to test that try to communicate with general public in English and you will have the frustration. Living there in any place creates a blind spot for that place and we start multiplying the things x2 (for start).

But I do like the first answer about war. Yes, Vietnamese call it American war, which is very true. Specially after knowing the history. War is never good, don't matter what cause it is. Both ends have justifications and stories. Not that north did any good, but USA never did any good in Vietnam.

Vietnam has put a big L in front of USA and even now we Americans don't know anything about Vietnam other than the war.
