Vietnamese translation help?
Hi, I'd like someone to clarfiy something in Vietnamese for me. I have a close friend who calls me 'map' as a nick name. She assures me that it is a term of endearment meaning something like darling. Any search I have done on 'map' returns fat, or like a pig. I now there are several different types of the letter 'a' in the vietnamese dictionary. All giving different meaning. Could anyone clarify 'map' for me please? Hope you can help!!! :)
Well, it is a negative word to address someone, but if she means well and you are ok being called "fat" then there is no harm. If you are not comfortable with it, then just tell her not to call you so. Take care.

It does actually mean "fat," however it doesn't have the same mood as when you call somebody "fatty" in English.
Think of it as "chubby," a very cute way to call somebody!
