With the exception of the last answer I do not think you have had very helful advice. I have been to Vietnam 6 times in the last 4 years all travelling from the UK. I would advise as follows:

Yes - you need to have a visa in advance.
The cost has been around £38 but I suggest you ring the Embassy (which is located in Kensington, West London - nearest tube Gloucester Road) to confirm if you wish to apply by post. If possible though attend in person, you do however have to return to pick up your passport or pay £5-00) for it to be posted. I have had mistakes made on visas issued before that were rectified when I was in the Embassy and this is an advantage of attending to pick up the visa.

If you need a double entry visa to Vietnam you must apply for this before you travel and pay the higher fee.

Take note of the opening times at the Embassy, I recommend not getting there early when it can be quite busy but later on, shortly before it shuts. Often then you will be the only person there and save a lot of time.

Links below - Embassy and link to download the application form.

Agents charge a lot to get a visa, worth it if you live far from London otherwise not.

Good luck

You cannot just come to Vietnam and easily get a visa on arrival, it must be pre-arranged through approved
Vietnamese travel agents and will involve extra expense and time. It's a very simple process to obtain a visa before you go, I'm not from the UK, but have obtained numerous visas to Vietnam before I left. If you live anywhere near an embassy or consulate, it's just a matter of dropping off your passport, the one page application w/photo and paying the fees and picking it up from 1-5 days later depending on how quickly you need it. Check your countries embassy website if you need to process by mail, but I certainly would not recommend trying a visa on arrival in Vietnam. Good luck. Here's the embassy website in the UK: http://www.vietnamembassy.org.uk/consular.html

Visa may be granted on arrival for those coming from countries

Certain international Vietnam Airlines flights are scheduled

with an intermediate stop in Vietnam before final destination

obtained on arrival, provided:

visa will be issued on arrival; and
- passenger is continuing journey out of Vietnam upon arrival

at next destination in Vietnam.

Passenger must hold:
- all documents for next destination; and

- sufficient funds for period of stay.
