If your Mother is temporary or permanent resident status, make sure you check with INS to assure her status allows her to leave the U.S. and come back without issue. She may not need a Vietnam visa if she is still holding a Vietnam passport, but you should check with the Vietnam consulate to make sure.

As for favorite items to take to Vietnam...

Anything that is made in the U.S. is desired. Perfumes or colognes from the U.S. are hot items. The kids love American chocolates - then again who doesn't. A bag of Hershey bars will make you the best friend of all the Vietnamese you can pass them out to.

Two dollar bills are cherished by the Viets. For reasons unknown to me, giving a $2 bill is a symbol of friendship to the Viets when you give one to them.

If you have a little money, personal electronics adaptable to Asian AC power are hot items. Viets will pay a premium for Ipods, Bluetooth headsets, and laptops with U.S. brands. IBM laptops usually fetch almost twice the price in Vietnam as they cost in the U.S.

Let's not forget alcohol. American Whiskey is savored by the Viets. Johnny Walker, Jack Daniels and even the cheap Black Velet are excellent choices.

A good place to get your souveniers is at a dollar store. Load up on candy and cheap pefume with "Made in U.S.A." on the bottle, and you will win many Vietnamese friends without spending too much money.

WHAT NOT TO BRING - Rather, do not bother bringing. Clothing, shoes, sportswear, etc. All that stuff is made predominantly in Asia now and can be purchased at dimes on the dollar in Vietnam compared to buying it in the U.S.

i'm guessing your mom is viet namese... i would not let her leave here without 1st having a us passport... they take a while to get nowadays even for a citizen... make her a citizen first so she will be treated as such over there and when trying to come back here..
.. any way yes i've heard its nice to bring perfume, and i know they love getting "dao xang" from here ..even though they have it there ???? but if they are poor cash is most appreciated.. if they are not poor just about anything from here is a welcome gift, baseball caps, ive brought real nice towels but they never use them ..seems they prefer to dry off with tinny wash cloths???? little ceramic nic nacs for the front room china cabinets are also cherished... and while your there take lots of photos for them...

If she have a Green Card and her Passport that is good enough
She is a Citizen of Vietnam so they can stop her from coming in
and she have a Green Card for The US so she is safe for Travel ling

You call Vietnamese Embassy. They have all answers, It would be not easy if she left VN long time ago, cause she doesn't have US passport yet.

If your mother is Vietnamese oversea, she don't need a visa as per the newest law of Vietnamese government. All vietnamese oversea and their family can come to Vietnam without visa. They just need the certification that they were vietnamese or relative of Vietnamese (husban, wife, son, daughter..).

money, jeans, american clothes, toothpaste are a good souvenirs........toothpaste in VN is like WATER!!!! can't really clean ur teeth....

since u u n ur mom only "thinking" of going back to VN, then i don't feel like wasting my time helping u out since u ain't going.....but when u buy a ticket, tell them to apply for a VN visa, or u can apply it urself when u get into VN....only $40

What to bring here? well ...Perfume is a good idea for women. Something that is popular in the US. I've heard that technic stuffs are sold in the US much cheaper than here, so you can bring some (ipods, laptop, cellphones...) over here for a 'little business', or a precious gift for someone.
If there are kids give them english books, toys and some pocket US money would be nice.

Here's the website for the Vietnamese Embassy in the US, it should have all the information you need to know for travel there, as far as bringing gifts, it might be best to ask your relatives if there's something you could bring them that's not available in Vietnam, I live in Asia and there's always something I ask for when friends and relatives visit, have fun:
