We just got back. We went to Cambodia and Vietnam between 1 and 23 Dec and the weather was prefect. The rainy season ends in Nov in the south and a little latter in the North. We had rain on one day during the trip and that was in Hue.
I noticed one answer to your question "When the War is over".
The Vietnam War ended in 1975. It is a perfectly safe country to visit.
We walked all over HCMC (Saigon) and Hanoi with no problems at all. |

I would recommend November-January. After that it'll be too hot. Before that it would be raining all the time. |

I have been in February, July, and August and my wife is there at the moment (and she is complaining of the cold!).
I think my preference would be July. The heat is not oppressive and should not be a problem.
I would suggest not traveling from Ha Noi to Ho Chi Minh as it is a long, long way with not much to see (apart from Hue and Nha Trang).
Better might be to visit Sa Pa, Ha Long Bay, and Cat Be island while in Ha Noi then fly to Sai Gon and visit the Mekong Valley, the Chi Chi tunnels and possibly Da Lat.
Enjoy |

About weather, if you cannot suffer low temperature, you shouldn't spend your time in Northern Vietnam in winter. There are usually huge storm in the North and especially in the Middle in late summer and early winter. In the South, the climate is very hot all the year round- over 20 degree Celsius.
I suggest you should come to Vietnam in spring because traditional festivals are usually celebrated in this season. |

In terms of weather, the best time is from Nov to early Feb. After that it gets quite hot for the rest of the year. Summer is usually rainy, and the monsoon runs from May to Oct. That said, Vietnam is a long country in the North-South direction, and weather in the North (Hanoi) is quite different from the South (HCM). Hanoi and the mountain areas in the North can get quite cold in winter.
In terms of events, the Lunar New Year or "Tet" is probably the most interesting time. Unfortunately you just missed it - it was on Jan 26 this year. That is a very festive time, but also crowded and more expensive than usual. |

Once stepping at Hanoi, visitors shall be attracted by the harmonious, romantic, old and profound beauty of Hanoi. With a unique beauty created for nearly thousand years of history, Hanoi is impressive for every visitor. In Hanoi, visitors can find a sacred temple, a pagoda with hundred of years in many places for incense burning and praying, temporarily forgetting daily tired feeling of earning. The typical ones can be named with Tran Quoc pagoda built up under Ly Nam De rule (6th century), One-pillar pagoda with a unique lotus flower-shape or the old Ngoc Son temple in the center of city, etc.http://tourism.0fees.net/Vietnam.html |

Vietnam is a lovely country to visit. We went for three weeks in October - last year and just missed some big floods. There was a lot of rain. But it is difficult to get perfect weather everywhere as being long and narrow the weather is very different in each area.
We spent most of our time in the north and central areas in three weeks. Hanoi is lovely. You will want to go to Halong Bay. You can't miss Hoi An. Hue is also great. It will depend when you do go whether you can enjoy the beaches. It was too wet for us.You could spend time around Ho Chi Minh and then fly to Hue.We flew from Hanoi to Danang to see the central area.
We went to Lake Ba-be which was lovely, but a trip to Sapa would be great. They have 3-4 day tours from Hanoi.
