Does anyone know how much a 30 day tourist visa for Vietnam costs? I know there is an £8 postage fee, but the UK Viet embassy website has no info on visa fees. When phoning them the answering ...
China supported the NVA. They have a billion people and a couple million soldiers. The chinese could throw a few divisions into the war and not even miss them.

Sadly , yes. The fear of "the communist peril" was high in 1954 when Dien Bien Phu fell to the "communists " who were really nationalists. The US saw all of eastern Europe fall to the communists, then North Korea then a communist threat in Malaysia. The domino theory came in : if Vietnam was allowed to go communist then each country in SE Asia would fall to the communists.
Unfortunately things like nationalism or history were not high on the agenda of the US leaders. Rather than assume Vietnam would join China in the march to communism, they should have read history to see Vietnam had fought China for 2000 years to stay independent.
Then the insane body count to victory came into the picture : let's kill more of them than us which required more and more of "us"
When Vietnam became an independent communist nation not a single other nation in SE Asian became communist. So much for the domino theory.
And when the US left in '75 , they had the same peace terms as offered in '72 but Nixon/Kissinger did not want to endanger the US election for which another 28,000 young Americans died between '72 and '75.
Reminds me of the end of the Heart of Darkness: "The horror , oh the horror"

The US involvement in Vietnam was merely a sideshow for other Nixon/Kissinger wrong doing . Read Sideshow written by William Shawcross ,
