We are going to Vietnam tomorrow. What kind of adapter do we need to plug in our electronics there, specifically an Apple MacBook.

I’m an IT consultant and I travel quite often - especially to Vietnam. I regularly face plug compatibility and power supply issues while traveling, and I cannot afford to screw around with products that would jeopardize the integrity of my electronic equipment. For plug adapters, you will want the following:

APC International Plug Adapter
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=INPA

This unit is rugged, easy to use and easy to store. The unit’s profile is small enough to fit in a pant pocket. It can be configured to any AC plug configuration you will find. I have two of these that have survived through dozens of brown outs and blackouts without issue.

You MacBook’s power supply should be adaptable to 220 VAC, but check the specifications to make sure. You will need just the plug adapter if it does support 220 VAC otherwise you will need to invest in a power supply that can handle 220 VAC. I would also recommend APC for a replacement power supply, but I don’t have a specific model to recommend, because that will depend on how your MacBook is configured.

You will want to buy your AC adapters and power supplies in the United States. Electronics sold in Vietnam is often low grade and low quality stuff. If you value your MacBook, you will want to take the extra steps to keep it from getting whacked in a brown out.

Have a great trip!

Often there are wall sockets that accept both the European round pin and the US flat pin plugs. You want to make sure your power packs are 110/220 - most are these days. If not you will need to get a stepdown transformer for any 110-only devices you may have.

You can find adapters in VN to convert flat pin to round pin plugs - they are "dirt cheap" and better yet you can find equally inexpensive multi-strip plugs that accept almost any plug type you can imagine.

take your 2 pin round plug, or just buy one there for a couple of bucks to save weight

They use 220v, so you would need a converter, too. You can buy one at Radio Shack but it's cheaper there, if you can wait to buy it there. Have fun.
