We are heading to Sapa Vietnam, what's the best thing to do? |
We are heading to Hanoi on 20th January 09 and would really like to explore Sapa from Hanoi.
Is it best to book our Sapa trip with a tour or go on our own? I heard it's much cheaper to do it all on our own.. how much is a train ticket to Sapa anyway?
anyone with any great ideas or advice would be awesome!
mm.. also, we are on a budget, but not a backpacker's budget.. it's our honeymoon..hehehe. Just want to be smart about it and not get ripped off..
thanks Additional Details Honest and genuine ideas please.. |

The best way is to go on your own. Train cost around 100-300 thousand Viet Dong $$..The more you pay, the better your seat will be. I believed it will be a 8-10hrs ride, not sure, I felled asleep on the train..
Once you reach Lao Cai train station, which is the last station in North of Vietnam..There will be lots of hungry taxi drivers there..You can bargain with them, should cost no more than $20 ($320,000 Viet Dong) for a 45 minutes ride to Sapa.
In Sapa, the place you don't want to miss is Ham Rong Resort or (Ham Rong Mountain)..The weather will be bit cold in January..Hotel cost around $10-$15 ($160,000 Viet Dong $$)
Make sure your camera and video are fully charge..
Have fun in Sapa..(*_*) |

Hey, I did the same trip - I stayed in a hostel and they were organising trips but I found that if I booked my own train tickets and hotel it was much cheaper. I cant remember how much it was sorry.
Best thing to do is get the night train up (is a very nice train with beds and little lampshades which I thought was cool). When you arrive haggle for a taxi, I would say though to look online and book your hotel.
I was there for a couple of days and did a half day mountain trek (arranged by hotel) you get taken by a local girl and anpther group of locals will walk with you chatting all along the way and then when you get to a certain spot they will start asking you to buy their wears!
The trek takes you through the markets which is interesting (watch out for the dog paws on sale!).
The 2nd day I hired a moped - or you can get someone to drive whilst your passenger and went up a mountain to see a waterfall (be warned its warm at the start but freezing at the top)
Sapa is a beautiful place with great views, very romantic for part of your honeymoon - Your have a great time! |

Hi,
January is peak season in Vietnam so you'd better book in advance. It's very cheap to travel by your own account but you are on your honeymoon so you should book a Sapa trip with a tour operator, there are many tour operators that offer you budget tours. The train tickets from Hanoi to Sapa is about 27 USD (soft sleeper bed with air condition), about 10 USD for a seat.
Enjoy your honeymoon in Vietnam. |
