Please dont travel by bus unless you have to,i live here and hardly a week goes by without me herein of a major accident. The trains are safe but very very slow,[24 hours]Pacific airlines and Vietnam air run all during the day,you may wish to check there web sites for prices.

The fastest is plane (1.45hrs), the cheapest would be bus (best part of 2 days travel time).

Pacific Airlines now fly HN - HCMC for as low as 500,000VND (35USD) and you can book online at www.pacificairlines.com or visit one of their offices once in Vietnam.

There are night/day buses and trains but they take ages to travel between the two cities. Trains are quite safe, buses can dangerous as outlined above.

Hope this helps!!

Just got back from Vietnam. Hope this helps.
A flight between the 2 cities one way is around 50.00 -60.00 USD or between 800000-110000 dong. This would be with Vietnam Airlines. The planes we were on were all new.
Don't take the bus. Very dangerous, accidents all the time.
When we were there, a bus tried to beat a train & didn't make it. He killed 16 people & injured dozens more.

The train is the cheapest and safest way, anyway it's slow - Slow but sure

Budget airline, pacific airlines - less than $75, for better service take Vietnam Airlines - less than $100.
Busses is cheaper than train, but will take ages to reach HCM, not really safe as well.
Train is pretty safe, nice view along the way but you will only waste your time inside the train. Not recommended if your visit is for business trip.

overnight train

The fastest way of travel is to fly. Vietnam Airlines have new planes and good service. The price from HCMC to HaNoi is around $100.

The train is the most fun; but if you don't have a great deal of time the train is to slow.

I do not recommend the bus. My brother in law just came back from HaNoi to Hue and he said it was terrible. You couldn't sleep, bounching around and he felt unsafe.

Good luck.
