sai gon, if your looking upscale, then all the swank hotels have roof top bars with entertainment. my favorite is the caravel... i like the view. down in the" back pack area" pham ngu lau, de tham, and bui vien streets there are a number of spots, "lost in sai gon", "guns and rose" and the most popular ,"allez boo". you can get any taxi to take you to "apocolyps now" or "sheridans iris pub" on le thanh ton street... another good place is"thanh nien" a resturant that sometimes has live music its at 133hai ba trung. just down the street from a good medical clinic by "daimonds dept store [daimonds has a movie theater and observation deck thats worth a look at night its right behind the main postoffice and cathedral] ha noi, not so much. down around ho hoan kiem[ hoan kiem lake] is a real nice resturant.. you'll see it, its all lit up but you should make reservation , great food and traditional entertainment. there are some roof top bars also in that area... stay away from the water puppet thearter unless you need a nap.the best place to go in that area is"cau lac bo nhac jazz" at 31 luong van can street. there are lots of small interesting places in the "old town "[ pho cuu} its a small interesting area with lots of shops , just stroll around you'll find something. there on the corner of nguyen ngoc luong street & ta hien are 4 bier hoi spots[ bier hoi is tap beer right out on the street, very cheep very socialble, very vui[ fun]...just down the street [ on ta hien] is a nice jiont called "labyrith", you'll see the neon sign.. have fun make sure you stop in nha trang[ start out at the dong phuong hotel on nguyen thien thuat street, tell em ong jon sent you.]

The Rex Hotel in HCMC has a great view and does a great Manhattan but is a bit posh and more for your older crowd. Likewise, the restaurant across the street, on top of the Russian Tax Department store is equally as good but best for a bite before heading out.
Apocolypse Now is cheesy but necessary when you visit HCMC and one of the few places open late. I liked the Blue Gecko (can't remember the street but it's in most of the guides - I used Footprint). It's kinda of an Aussie theme bar with pool and darts and has the funniest woman running the place. There also a bar down on the main backpacker drag which I can't remember the name of. It's a couple of doors up from the Sinh Cafe and if essentially a British football bar. It does great food, shows lots of Premiership and has the best barmaids, in terms of chat, in the whole of Vietnam. I spent my last night in Vietnam there and it was great.
Hanoi is more sedate but they also have a Apocolypse Now, which might be worth a look. There are some nice little restaurants/bars in the backpacker area (about 150yards from the lake) but the Bia Hois are really good fun and you get to see a lot of local colour, especially if you're standing the rounds (at approx 25c for a litre you can afford to!). Hope you enjoy both cities.
