Cultural stuffs (more in Hanoi), foods, shopping with very cheap prices ... Well, for me, it's better if you also visit Hoi An, Hue, Nha Trang ...

It depends on what interests you. There is lots to see and do in and around Ha Noi. I like walking around the streets in the old town. The pottery village, Bat Trang, is well worth a visit. It is a short taxi ride (or much cheaper bus ride). Visit the back streets and you will come across the pottery makers, not simply the many shops that are what most visitors see.

Check out Hoa Lo Prison. It is one of the many museums in Ha Noi.

The Water Puppets near Hoan Kiem Lake are definitely worth seeing. I have been there many times and always saw something new (even though it is the same show) and always enjoyed myself.

There is a National Tuong Theater that plays pieces from various classical stories. That is really, really good! I can't give you the address, but it is east of Hoan Kiem Lake, on the edge of the old quarter. You can ask around and should be able to find it.

The neatest things that I experienced, aside from Tet with Vietnamese friends, was being invited to various cultural events by my friends. Do some serious internet research and see if you can identify any special events at pagodas or temples in the Ha Noi area during your visit.

be out on the street at 5 am w/ your camera, Be at the market, be at the parks, BE OUT IN THE STREET AT 5 AM.. if you at the sea side make that 4am.....you can go back to bed later .all the rest is in every tour guide book..

You can see ho chi min (THE DEAD AND WAXED UP BODY), who is like a legend of vietnam beware now allowed water or camera's and it is stinking hot!

There is a lot of shopping to be done. Take a map out with you, and you can wade in between shopping stalls selling gold buddha's to zippo lighters.

Halong Bay without a doubt. Spend overnight in a tourist boat and see the sunset. It is paradise!
