The reason was the media and news reporting and the new technology. For the first time, there was unrestricted coverage of the fighting. You saw it at dinner on the news, late night on the news, in the morning in the news.
Previously, there were "war correpondents" that had to "clear" information with the war department or now dept. of defense.
Technology affected the reporting of the war since then the wars reporting could be sent via satellite direct to the US. Edited or unedited. Prior to that we would have to wait hours or days before film could be developed and shown. Then tapes could be edited and shown.
Because of all of the above, the travesties of war was shown like no other war before. Live and uncut sometimes. The My Lai massacre and other atrocities were parts of the war the just exacerbated the problems there.
Overall, it's just that there was no justification other than beating the drum for "freedom" against the communist tyranny. The american people had no stake other than the US was fighting for someone who was corrupt. The people of Vietnam were only fighting for freedom, it was a matter of whose type of freedom won.
The irony of it all. Is that now Vietnam is opening it's doors to capitalism as is China.

The draft for one.
And the media coverage for two.

The war was taking a long time. Its cost was getting high. The number of dead bodies was rising.
