I'm going to Hanoi for a holiday. Since this is the first time for me, I would like to know which currency the Vietnamese prefer,USD or their own .......
dong (vietnam currency) is widely used.
the display of prices is in dong. trading can be done in both currencies but they will give you dong for change.

If you go into expensive restaurants or tourist shops you can get prices quoted in US$ or dong. Bring a bank card and withdraw money from your home account in dong, either at the ANZ bank or Citibank. I used them for 4 1/2 years without a problem, except of course the occasional times when the machines were out of money and needed to be refilled.
Exchange rate was bouncing around 16,000 to the US$ a month ago.

If you carry $100 bill, make sure get the new bill or nice looking bill (if possible for you) and printed after 1996. It is easy for you to exchange. There are some shop where is very picky when exchange dollar bills.
Tong Sam Pah
Carry USD and exchange it for the dong on arrival.
