What do you HAVE to bring to Vietnam? |
I’m going to Vietnam for two weeks with my mother; I’m 14 years old and was wondering if there is there anything that you think I HAVE to bring. Or any advice you would like to give me. Ps I’m also staying with a family for two days and was wondering if anyone had any ideas of a good gift to give them other than money I’m also from California and thought maybe a shirt of the golden gate bridge but I need to bring??….

as far a gifts anything you bring from the usa will be well received, truly it is the thought that counts .. the golden gate bridge "t" shirt is a golden idea..if they are in need , a cash gift is not only appreciated , it is also proper etiquette and often necessary especially if you are family.. i'd say be prepared to give cash , have some nice crisp bills and red envelope[ any envelope will do] just in case you feel moved to help once you are there
for yourself bring antibiotics, cold medications[ alka seltzer plus] aspirin, sun screen, imodium , Dramamine, and a tetanus shot.. waite your only 14.. dont you give money just a small friendship gift is more than enough.. take lots of picture of your friends and have copies made there or mail some back.. if your going with your parents you may suggest they be prepared to give $$'s if the situation arises |

Hi Samira, I have been to Viet Nam many, many times and now have a wife and children who live here. These are a few of the things I bring with me every time I come.
Board games, my eldest daughter and all her friends LOVE to play Monopoly (my wife had to translate the Community Chest cards). We even added a $200 bill (VND) to the game. The winner keeps the (Vietnamese) money (sometimes 500 VND bills as well, they're about 3 cents American). You will have to teach them the game unless you can find Viet instructions (maybe on the web).
I brought my young son a "Rock'em, Sock'em Robot" toy this year. He is too young to really appreciate it but that thing is pretty indestructible and the other kids have a lot of fun with it.
I always fill my carry-on with chocolate that I buy whenever I see it on sale. (it keeps very well if you put it in the freezer) Also, they don't have "ju ju beans", "tootsie pops", or other non-chocolate American candy over here and the kids love them.
Another must have is rechargeable batteries and a charger (AA batts and the charger should take 120-220 volts) A flashlight that takes the batteries is also handy since the power often goes out and I haven't seen any small (AA) flashlights in the stores).
You may wish to bring insect repellent and sunscreen since they are difficult to find over here (and expensive).
Those are a few of the things I ALWAYS bring. You can email me if you want more suggestions.
Have a fun time! |

You are not going to really NEED anything that you can't find. One thing that is hard to find in Vietnam are Books. So bring your own reading material.
As far as what to bring. Bandannas are in big demand. the vietnamese love to cover their faces when on the motor bike.
Games and toys of all kinds
Penny candy if such things still exist. (just hard candy)
The Tshirt is a good idea because of the theme. but by in large you can get just about any clothing or shoes here and cheaper that the states.
Although it is the other side of the world. You will be amazed at what is here as far as groceries and things to shop for. As and american living in Vietnam, I can give you a long list. That starts with Taco seasoning and goes all the way to books and more books.
Don't worry to much. You will have a lot of fun. |

It seems that there have been lots of advices for you. However I think, which firstly you have to bring are your passport, visa to Vietnam... so that you can get into Vietnam. Vietnam now is summer so you should bring T-shirt or summer clothes. By the way, Vietnam has many beautiful landscapes so you should also bring camera. Last but not least, books about Vietnam is important. Good luck.
Tips: I recommend you an authoritative address to get visa to Vietnam http://www.vietnam-visa.com. It's very fast and easy. |

I go to Vietnam almost every Summer and I think I'm going to go this summer. I just wanna give you some tips, advice and what to bring
-Bring American money with you, you can exchange the money at a jewelry store. That way you can buy things in Vietnam. Just make sure they don't rip you off.
-In Vietnam, there are lots of bugs! Make sure!!!! You buy a mosquito lotion in one of those vietnamese stores where they sell chips, candy, ice cream, soccer balls. Etc. Put the lotion on your legs, arms and a little but on your neck and face. Every night. And put a fan near you. It helps to get the mosquitos away. I really works. And they have sented orange and flower lotion. :] I like the orange one. Smells nice.
-Be carefull when you sleep!!!!! Theres bugs EVERYWHERE. They get in your ears and clothes and stuff. Bring a pillow.
-In Vietnam, most people use paper like in note paper to wipe there butts. I would bring a toliet paper just in case. By the way, the bathrooms are very very dirty so don't touch anything. They have bathrooms where your have the sqaut. And the flush it, theres a bucket and water. All you have to do is fill that bucket with water and pour it in the toilet.
-It very very hott in Vietnam so bring some hair stuff with you. You hair might get really frizzy. Trust me.
-Bring a paper fan. Trust me, it comes in handy when your sleeping. Its get hot. You don't even need a blanket.
-Bring flip flops. More then one, It will get lost easily. I know mine did, I had to buy another one at a slipper store and they were not pretty slippers/flip flops. Oh and yea, you'll be walking a lot.
-Bring a hat!!!! When you ride motorcyles, your hair will be flying. And lots of times you have to be careful when getting of the motorcycle, you might burn your leg. Hold on very tight to the person who is riding the motorcycle cause one time I fell...
-To give you heads up, bring shampoo and laundry detergent. Yea, you gotta wash your clothes by hands and hang it up out side to dry. Make sure you bring in your clothes when it rains.
-I would bring lotion if i where you. Since it will be hot but you can just use the mosquito lotion I told you about eariler.
-Bring hair ties and put up your hair, a couple of mintues walking and your face will be already sweating.
-Bring SUNSCREEN!!!!!!!! Sun everywhere, its not so good when you have dark skin and You will get skin cancer. So put it on whenever you go outside for a long period of time. Or ether that, just put it on everyday.
-Bring a cup to wash out your mouth with water when brushing your teeth. If you live in a tiny part of Vietnam, they don't have sinks but big big big pot thingies of water where you have to scoop out you own water.
-bring a towel for you face and to cover your toothbrush and tooth paste, you don't want bugs to get in there.
-DO NOT BRING FLAVORED TOOTHPASTE!!!!! For example, watermelon or cotton candy or any of that stuff. Just Mint. Theres lots of ants and the tend to like those flavored toothpaste. Even if you put it from the highest places the ants will still get it. I happend to be before. It was gross...
-Bring lots of pads if you have a period. They don't sell lots of them like they do here. Its hard to find pads there. =_= For me that is.
-Most importantly, just watch out for bugs and geckos. They have lots and lots and lots of geckos there. There everywhere. They don't bite. |
