Anh Hai is simply what you would call your oldest brother.
Anh, refers to your older brother.
Hai, is the number 2. However, This does not mean he is the second born brother. There's this little fairy tale about how a demon would seek to eat the first born child of every family, and therefore, they don't label any child with the number 1.
However, here's where it gets a bit complicated:
-If Anh Hai has a younger sister, yet that younger sister is older than you, than you refer to her as Chi Ba. Chi, as in older sister, and Ba as in the number 3. So in order in which they are born is the order their number in their name is presented. It's not like second born male or female, it's just second born child.
-If you have a cousin, and their parents are older than your parents, no matter which age they are, you have to refer to them as Anh Hai (given that they are the first born male).
-And finally, if you have a cousin who is related to you by GRANDPARENTS, than depending on the relationship between your grandparents would decide if you called them older or younger brother. If their grandparents are older than yours, you would refer to them as Anh Hai (again, assuming he is the first born son).
So it's all relative to your relationship between that male. Typically, people like to say it's your oldest brother, but that's not always the case, as they may be cousins and such. So you'll actually have more than one Anh Hai, unless you're the oldest born male in the entire family.
And this can be applied to others:
Chi=Older (female)
Anh=Older (male)
Em=Younger (male or female)
Followed by the number in which they were born.
Remember that it's all relative to your relationship to that person. If they are a friend, you don't need to worry, but if they are your cousin, you need to trace down where exactly does your cousin's parents, or grandparents lie relative to your parents or grandparents, respectively.
And it gets even more complicated considering aunts/uncles on your mother or father's side, let alone those that are married to them. |
