What immunizations do I REALLY need for Thailand/Vietnam??? |
I'm going to be traveling around the world with stops in the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, and South America. Do I need proof of a yellow fever shot to enter any countries like Vietnam or Brazil? What shots do I REALLY need? What shots should I get to be on the safe side? Anti-malarial pills??? |

We've backpacked and been on short vacations all over Southeast Asia. We're Canadians living in Taiwan. You don't need any proof of vaccination to enter Veitnam. You need $20 US and thats all. (lol)
In short: malaria pills and tetanus.
I went to the local health center and got everything except my second Hep C shot. My husband got nothing and we're both fine. I've had dengue fever in Thailand but there's no vaccination for that. We've both had stomach parasites but you take one pill once for that. There's lots of doctors there and they help you with little sicknesses like bladder infections or stomachaches. Virtually every long-term traveller ends up with travellers diarrhea, so a lot of people bring over the counter meds for that. Malaria pills are a must, I believe. Just something you don't want to contract. Really, that's all we take and need. Make sure your tetanus is updated incase of any open wound that gets infected on the beach or in the water. By the way, anti-malaria pills suck. They give you insomnia, weird dreams and make you thirsty, but you gotta take em. |

doctors will show you the diseases on the list and will give you the right shots you need, all tourists will do the same |

Besides your own doctor, your local public health agency has a complete list of the shots you'll need to visit any country in the world. In addition to the required immunizations, they will also have a list of the "recommended" items which are optional but highly advisable for your own protection.
My own experience is that most private physicians/clinics do not stock all of the vaccines required so you'll have to go to the public health agency anyway so why not go there in the first place? |

Every State has a Center for Disease Control (CDC). Within the CDC there are travel clinics. These travel clinics are staffed with expert professionals whom can provide you with immunization advice as well as disease protection. Look on the internet for the CDC and they should have a link to travel clinics in your area. Schedule a consult with the health professional. You can get vital information, health alerts and literature in a package and you may also get Rx for medication like antibiotics as well as vaccinations. You can decide to get the vaccinations there of go to your own physician or the local health dept. I am going to Vietnam and this is where I got started. I have all the Rx needed, information, medical alert, but got all my shots at the local health dept. ( it was cheaper there)
So go the the Center for Disease Control website. Good Luck |

A friend of mine came home from Vietnam with an intestinal parasite. It was awful. I can't answer your question, but suggest you research this as well. |
