Through its history, Hanoi (should actually be Ha Noi) has many names. However, the most famous and well-known name was "Thang Long".

You can read more from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanoi, but here are the meaning of these names:

* Ha Noi = Inside (Noi) River (Ha), due to the city being surrounded by many rivers, with the most famous one being Song (River) Hong (Red) or Red River.

* Thang Long = Ascending (Thang) Dragon (Long), due to an old legend about the city. Dragon is quite a character in Vietnam's history, so you will find dragon in a few names. For example, another famous destination in Vietnam is "Ha Long Bay" (or the Bay of the Descending Dragon.)

* Dong Do = Eastern Capital

* Dong Quan = Eastern Gateway

* Dong King = also Eastern Capital :-)

However, in many stories (literature, songs, poems) the two names "Ha Noi" and "Thang Long" are possibly most popular.
