Believe it or not, Vietnam's Government has taken major steps towards reforestation and environmental reclamation. There are many areas of the country that is protected from population growth to allow mangroves and other habitats an opportunity to thrive. Vietnam has the advantage of being predominantly in a tropical ecosystem with an abundance of rain. Mother Nature will reclaim lands and erase human existence very rapidly as she has done before. However, there are some areas that Mother Nature will need some help.

The toughest job is reclaiming the environment lost during the Vietnam War. Quang Tri Province has the unfortunate distinction of being the most bombed area in the world. Much of the area remains a moonscape and much more is injected with tons of dangerous unexploded ordinance, which has killed thousands of innocent people since the War ended over 30 years ago.

Several NGOs are already at work in trying to reverse the problem, but the latest estimates indicate that it could take over 60 years before the region can be deemed safe. In the meantime, people and children will continue to lose hands, feet, limbs or their lives from such tragic accidents.
