What is the best way to travel through vietnam? Any tips on trains or buses?

I lived in VN for over 4 years (maybe some of the others who have been there longer will chime in on this too). The train system is pretty decent if slow. Unless you are in a hurry, in which case I would recommend flying, for major north/south movement the trains are a good alternative - get a sleeper, meet your cabin mates, and enjoy the view.

Buses go everywhere, and they go everywhere fast, too fast! The risk of accidents is high, so given a choice between train and bus, I would take the train.

You are kind of stuck taking buses for going off the main routes, or if you are in a hurry, or if you can not get a train ticket (happens sometimes).

Hiring a car can be useful for short hops, but forget long-distance by car. Also, cars can go faster than the buses, so if you do hire a car, make sure it is clear you want to arrive alive, not try to arrive early.

since it seems u are a foreigner, best way would be to hire a car and a driver, and have him take you to all the different cities from up north to down south. that way, you are more comfortable. although do be careful. foreigners are always an easy target.
