When I was there (a year and a half ago), I heard them call themselves Laos (not pronouncing the 's'--rhymes with 'how'). That's also what they called their language and country. Now I could never figure out if they actually considered the 's' silent as they tend to drop the 's' sound on the end of words. For instance when they would say rice, it sounded like rye.
But most native English speakers I met there took the cue from the locals and used the word Laos (not pronouncing the 's') for the country, language and people. I still heard people say Laotian (always like Lay Ocean, not like Lau-shun) when describing things, like clothing for instance.
There are also a number of Hill Tribes, so she could refer to herself by her ethnic group, such as Hmong or Khmu, instead of her nationality.

Laotian.
Follow up: In Laotian "buck" prefix means male. "Pooyank" or "poosow" means girl. (My spellings are phonetic)...maybe the name your friend had was a nickname or something related to their gender.

G'day gforakis,
Thank you for your question.
They are called Laotian or Lao. The largest ethnic groups in the country are the Lao Loum who live in the lowlands (68%), the Lao Theung who live in the uplands (22%) and Lao Soung (9%) who include the Hmong and the Yao.
I have attached sources for your reference.
