Yes, you must stop at Ha Noi if you wanna get to Sapa quickly. From Ha Long, buy an open tour bus ticket to Ha Noi, and from here, buy a train ticket to Lao Cai. In Lao Cai do also to Sapa.

I agree with Tuan Mii..From Lao Cai train station, there will be thousand of taxi waitting for you..cost from Lao Cai train station to Sapa is around $250,000-$300,000 viet dong..depend how good of a bargain are you..
while in Sapa..don't forget to go to Nui Ham Rong.. |

If you want go to sapa from Halong in best way , the only way you can rent the private car get to Sapa, and i think you should better catch the bus go to Hanoi and then buy the night train ticket from hanoi to Laocai station( the cost will be 25$, 30$,35$ depending on what kind of coach do you prefer : 4 persons 1 cabin or 6 person 1 cabin), and from Laocai station to Sapa you have to catch the bus, and the rate about 7$/1person, it takes around 3 hours from Laocai to Sapa.
Otherwise you can do the Sapa's tour, 2days and 4 ngihts( the price will be 120$) sapa 3 days and 4 nights ( the price will be 160$ )included everything

rent a car! it takes 5 hours from Halong to Sapa. no need visit Hanoi, from Halong to Tienyen, turn to Highway No.4C to Laocai, then Laocai to Sapa. Great view on your way. It is not cheapest but not too expensive. Hard way but Quickest and useful for your discovering my country.
