There are way to many beautiful places to list. Basically, anyplace with a beach is good for me. Try Ha Tien, it hasn't been overun by tourists, yet.
My favorite place in Viet Nam is our farm in Binh Dai. I just returned 3 months ago to meet my new son. Because of my wife's pregnancy, the land was neglected for a year and a half. I've poured a ton of "sweat equity" into the place, gotten my brother-in-law to move into a house we built, and planted a ton of crops beneath the coconut canopy. My friends in America would think I was crazy, but I love that place. It is quiet, serene and green.

BTW: There is nothing as good as a Pina Colada made with fresh picked pineapple and coconut. I know cuz I'm having one now. lol

It depends on what you like and how much time you have.

I lived in Ha Noi for 4 years and really like the city. Ha Long Bay, Sapa, and several beaches are accessible from Ha Noi.

If you live in Saigon, the cool weather of Dalat can be very relaxing. I enjoy being able to sleep with a thick blanket at night there. A great place to get caught up on your loss sleep.

As you know, this season is rain in VietNam. So I think if you have a plan to travel 1 or 2 days at here, you should choice one of places as:
If you stay at Hochiminh city, you can come Vinh Long and Can Tho province on a tour about 2 days 1 night. One the way,there is a Festival Mekong Delta at these provinces. I am sure you will like very best with life styles, people and sightseeing at there.
If you stay at Hanoi or north provinces, you can choice a tour HaLong Bay to comtemplate a world cultural heritage at VietNam.

Nha trang is overrated! Everything is closed by 11 p.m. If you like to party, stick to Ho chi minh. District 5 for the bars/ clubs.

One place I always wanted to go but never did is to visit this animal sanctuary in the middle of Vietnam. They rescue endangered native vietnamese animals like the sunbear(so cute) and a strange looking dear only found in Vietnam.

If you like beaches go to danang..

I think where to go is to depend on your taste. I just suggest here some nice places with their characters
- In the north:
HaLong Bay, 150 km away from Hanoi, nice sea, by car
Sapa: highland area, you can see Vietnam minority, cool air, natural moutain..., you can go there by train, car
- In the middle: Danang City, city by sea
- In the south: NhaTrang city, and many other places nearby sea in the south such as Mui Ne... natural seas
