What shots do you need if you are going to holiday in Vietnam?

Show all answers

ong jon
none are required.. but get yourself as healthy as possible before you get on the plane[ those things are disease machines] drink lots of water on the plane, take cold pills antibiotics and imodium with you [you can get imodium there]..you will be fine.. maybe a tetanus shot is a good idea

Charlie
You dont need any at all , just check with your doctor that your tetanus is up to date . He may gave you a booster jab .
"Oz M" please note i did mention a doctor , and without the long winded list you have made . The person is going on holiday and i am sure your unnecessary lecture is pointless .The traffic is also bad do you suggest they read up on the Vietnamese highway code ?

you don't need any shot at all, you have to bring some lotion and sunscreen b/c it has a lots sunshine at here unless you want to make your skin darker...

I am surprised that people would say "don't worry about it". That is dangerous and irresponsible advice to give.

Only your doctor can advise you of this.

So to get competent advice, read an accurate advisory such as this one hosted by the Australian Government....

http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Vietnam#Health_Issues

A couple quotes from that advisory to share with you so you can see the inaccurate and irresponsible advice some have given you......

"The mosquito-borne disease Japanese encephalitis is prevalent in Vietnam....."

"Severe acute diarrhoea and several confirmed cases of cholera have been reported by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health in the capital Hanoi and the surrounding Northern Provinces."

"The mosquito-borne illness dengue fever occurs in Vietnam, particularly in the south. The number of cases of dengue fever in the south doubled in 2006 with the number of deaths also increasing. We recommend you take measures to avoid mosquito bites including using insect repellent at all times."

"Outbreaks of water-borne, food-borne, parasitic and other infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, rabies, typhoid, tuberculosis, and meningitis) occur from time to time. We encourage you to discuss your vaccination requirements with your doctor before traveling. ....."

In the international news only a few days ago, I heard a report of 3 current confirmed cases of humans infected with bird flu in Vietnam.

While true, the likely hood of contracting any of those diseases is rare, that will be of little comfort if you become one of the victims.

So please.... seek accurate informed advice from your doctor in regard to vaccinations and health concerns. Do not seek the advice of arm chair experts when it comes to matters that concern your health and possibly your life.
