im going to vietnam for a school trip in October and was wondering what i should wear?
is shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops alright? what should i wear to less-casual places like restaurants, shows and temples? what about in the mountains?
thanks
most tourists are accepted wearing shorts [ even in temples], but viet namese almost always dress "properly" when going out, long pants, clean dress shirts combed hair.. as a tourist be polite ,courteous, not too loud and you can get away with almost anything..dress comfortably, you'll be fine.
in the mts[ forests], especially during the rainy season[ oct -dec] there are many, MANY, leaches and mosquitoes wear long pants, long sleeves socks and boots if you have them

Ong Jon has given you very good advice, I will try to expand on it.
Since you will be buying new school clothes in September, why not save some of that money to bring with you. Clothes here are very inexpensive. I would bring enough clothes to last a few days at most, then purchase what-ever you need when you arrive. Unless you are either very tall or very heavy, they'll have your size (at about 20% of the US price.)
Bring a sturdy set of sneakers or boots for hiking in the mountains. You'll be wearing sandals/flip-flops the rest of the time. It's customary here to remove your shoes when entering somebody's home or office and often when entering shops. The sneakers and sandals can be purchased here at a very low price. I don't know about the boots since we don't live near the mountains.

"Ong Jon" is spot on a little bit of respect goes a long way in Vietnam.

Dress casually if you go shopping but wear long pant to the temples to show a sign of respect. To the mountains wear something comfy since you'll be doing a little bit of biking.

you're going to Vietnam lucky i been in Vietnam once but i don't remember my own country but seriously you should wear what you want it doesn't really matter unless you're in a fancy restaurant then you should wear something of the culture its similar to what Chinese wear
