Hanoi is great for a week
Halong Bay, 1 night/2 days
Sapa, in the hills near Hanoi (10 hour train ride away) good place to do home stay with local hill tribes - it gets cold here so take your woolies!
Hoi An in the central area, is a great place to hang out and there are plenty of craft type things to get hands on with there. Also can do cooking lessons etc here.
Phan Thiet, Mui Ne (in south 3 hrs from Saigon) has IMO the best beaches.
Saigon (HCMC) is pretty dull, 2 nights is plenty.
Mekong Delta is a great fun place where you can also arrange homestays with locals and learn about the culture of the southern Vietnamese. |

ive never seen batik in vn, but ive seen cooking classes in a number a restaurants in tourist towns you should not miss, nha trang , hoi an[da nang]... out of nha trang you can hire a motor bike and go to the countryside, you can buy your own hammock at any market but most tourist attractions and roadside restaurants have hammocks.. going into villages can be done on the "qt" but unless you know someone there there wont be anyplace for you... out of the way temples are very accessible, hospitable..and have hammocks..ask a moto driver.. make friends with locals and you just may get invited to their homes..
SUGGESTION; look at the long long list of resolved questions in this category for endless suggestions.. |

Sapa is worth a visit!
WHen you hit Hanoi check with the many tourist operations to see what they offer.
I have slept in quite a few villagers' homes over the years - but never in a hammock. On the floor, on a mat on a bed; but I am sure you can find a hammock if it is important to you.

There are a lot of things you could do while in VN. For sightseeing, you should make a visit to Nha Trang, which is a small city with beautiful beaches, and Dalat, where you can enjoy the mild climate of the plateaus. If you want to get to know the local people or live with them, then the Mekong Delta seems to be a suitable destination for you. The inhabitants there are among the friendliest, most honest and open-minded in VN. You will probably have a chance to sleep in a hammock under a coconut tree or in an orchard. The local people there may be willing to teach you how to cook some of the most delicious dishes. You can also watch how they prepare the food. Lastly, if you are looking for sth of the past, the old town of Hoi an in central VN is the right place for you.
Hope all this might be of some help to you. Have a nice journey.
* I know an Australian who has been attracted by Nha Trang. Each time he goes to VN, he stays in this seaside town for three months. He says he likes the fresh air and the sea there. |
