Whats the legality of us citizen marrying a vietnamese in vietnam--or a thai in thailand ?
Additional Details does it extend to community property in the states is she now entitled to my money and property legally even if she never leaves her country
I married a Thai in Thailand. A registered marriage in Thailand is acceptable as legal in the US.
To do so you must appear in person with your passports at your Embassy in Thailand to complete declarations attesting that you are single and free to marry in accordance with Thai Law (blank forms are available at the Embassy).
1. Take the completed declaration to a reputable translation office to have the contents of the declaration translated into Thai.
2. The documents together with translation and copies of passports have to be taken to the Legalization Division of Consular Affairs Department (address: 123 Chaengwattana Road, Laksi, Bangkok 10210 Tel: (66-2) 575-1056-60 Fax: 575-1054 E-mail: consular04@mfa.go.th ) where the Consular Official's signature will be authenticated. This normally takes 2 days. (You can pay a expedition fee and get them same day) The documents and translation are then ready for submission to the District Registrar who will register the marriage and issue the marriage certificate in Thai. You can have a ceremony or not up to you.

100% legal.
Just take your marriage certificate to the Embassy and have it recorded.
No big deal...especially as the Embassy probably helped you get all the paperwork arranged.
This is true for BOTH Thailand and Vietnam. (yes, I've been married in both countries, but not at the same time...)
