Where can I buy Heavy/Light cream in Saigon? |
I want to make home-made ice-cream. Are there stores or markets in the area that sell "real" whole milk products. Additional Details I am sorry, I need more specific info than "3 hours from Saigon" or "any market". I know I can buy boxed or powdered Sua at the market. I need an ingredient to make ice-cream (kem ly). |

Many of the supermarkets, CoopMart and Maximart carry little imported fresh cream cartons. If you can't find them there, Veggies market at 15 Thai Van Lung St, or Phuong Ha Mrkt at 58 Ham Nghi St./Thai Hoa Mrkt, next door at 60 Ham Nghi, all of which are in District 1, carry cream and all kinds of other expat (Western) foods. |

Hey Rick! Good to hear from you again…
Obtaining fresh real whole milk or cream as you would know is going to be a challenge as Vietnam’s dairy industry is quite different from the U.S. . Milk is one of the very few food products that Vietnam imports heavily, with most of it coming from New Zealand. The milk is pasteurized different allowing for a very long shelf life without refrigeration, which is necessary due to the transportation issues throughout the country.
Despite the setbacks, you can get what you’re looking for making home made ice cream but you'll have to be a little creative. You may have to compromise and experiment with the available milk products to get the ingredients for your ice cream. ex. Whole cream will likely be reconstituted from powered milk instead of being fresh.
When I was in Ha Noi, there was a family market that sold predominantly milk products (cheese, cream and milk). Also, my wife knows one of the top managers of an ice cream manufacturer in Ha Noi. However, that information is not going to do you any good being down South. I’m sure your family or friends would know who the “Milk Man” is in your village. One thing is for sure is your kids are going to be the happiest kids in town if you are able to pull off making ice cream for them.
Good luck to you my friend! |
