Where could I find a boat to rent for 5 people to fish in Vietnam? |
Anywhere around southern Vietnam. We're staying in a resort in Long Hai. Driving time is not a problem, but shouldn't be too bad. There's 5 of us, and we're thinking for about 6-7 hours rental. Thanks! |

You have a problem!!!!
You can easily rent a boat to go fishing, but you probably will have a really difficult time renting a boat to go fishing
in the manner you are used to!
Check on the internet - google "Vietnam sports fishing yourcity" with yourcity being the towns you expect to be in. You may find someone who does fishing trips for Tays.
When you hit a coastal town and if you haven't done your homework beforehand, but get the desire to go fishing, ask one of the nice guys / gals that wanders up and tries to chat you up in English where you can go fishing - explain to them you are looking to go out and spend x hours trying to catch fish, and offer them what you consider a reasonable "finders fee" to do so. You WILL get to go fishing, but you better be ready to try a tad of hand line, or other new ways of fishing.
If you end up in a coastal town, haven't done your homework beforehand, and don't feel like chatting (big mistake here by not wanting to chat!!!!) wander around and look at the tourist shops. You are bound to find notices about night fishing trips. |

I love ID's posts, He knows Vietnam. His advice is great but I would like to expand on it. You don't mention where in southern Vietnam you want to fish. If it is anywhere in the Mekong delta, you will be disappointed. Only catfish and crabs in my neck of the woods. The water is to silty. If I was there now, I could arrange a deep sea trip with the in-laws. However, try Vung Tau, Ha Tien or Phu Quoc. They have good fishing. In Vung Tau, go to Tom's Bar near the ferry dock and ask them to "hook" you up. It's a great ex-pat place and they'll bend over backwards to help you out. Tell "Belly" I said hi.
You can try to email me, but I have never received an email from YA. |

You’re in luck today! The two previous great answers come from some great people with great knowledge of Vietnam. I’m going to one-up them both.
You’re in a pretty good location to find someone that can take you fishing. Lots of fishermen launch from Vung Tau deep out into the South China Sea, which is renowned as one of the best fishing areas in the world. There are also lots of fishermen who launch right out of Long Hai. If you want tourist comforts while fishing, then you want to go to Vung Tau. If you don't mind a native experience, then Long Hai will do just fine.
If you’re staying at a resort in Long Hai, then you are probably staying in or near the Thuy Duong Hotel. There are two guys who live above the crab and lobster pool in between the beach restaurants at the Thuy Duong Hotel. They talk to fishermen all the time, and they will know which one is the best to take you and your friends out on the water for an excellent day of fishing. They don’t speak English, so you will have to get a translator. If at the least, the day manager can hook you up with everything you need.
L D is correct that Vietnamese fishing tactics are a bit different than what you might be accustomed to. On the other hand, Vietnam manufactures some of the world’s best fishing equipment. You can pole fish if you want or try the native techniques. F.Y.I. some of the native techniques, such as using basket hooks, are illegal in U.S. waters. This adds to L D’s references to a unique fishing experience.
I always thought it would be cool to fish from one of those big round baskets, which you can probably do right from Long Hai beach. My wife and I seen a bunch of them launching just South of Thuy Dong Hotel, and I would have done just that if we had another day there.
I hope you have a great time! |
