ho chi minh is really busy if you like that and hanoi is kinda peaceful quiet city

Probably Hanoi as it has really cheap beer Bia Hoi at about 20cents a glass

Both Cities are nice to visit. Overall, i prefer Ho Chi Minh City compare to Hanoi.

HCM is a big city with a lot of things to see. It can be expensive though due to wide usage of USD$. You can catch up some nice view at the Mekong river.

Halong Bay in Hanoi is something you dont want to miss. Hanoi have better scenery.

If you can, go to both cities to get better view of Vietnam.

Hi there , I have been living in the Provence of Nha Trang for almost 2yrs now, and as a foreigner i find HCM to be a much better place to visit. However in saying this it is a very busy city, many motorbikes, many people, many places to see and alot of shopping. Hanoi is ok but it is a business centre so as far as seeing alot i think HCM is a much better starter. But if you can tour around Vietnam then maybe you have the time to see both, as well as Hoi An, Nha Trang, Hue, Its a great country............. GOOD LUCK and ENJOY

Hanoi is so boring after a few days, while HCM is really more open-minded so mroe activities are available,

yeah its more expensive if you are alcoholic - thanks to the previous comment

if you need to save so much on the beer then Ha Noi all the way

Ho chi minh aka Saigon is a better place, rich in history and more wealthy.

they are both great for their own reasons, but u have to keep in mind that there was just an earthquake in hanoi. also u should check out da lat cuz that place is great

it all depends on your interest coz they are both nice and interesting cities.

hanoi - less developed so it retains the charming of old vietnam. hanoi offers more cultural and nature adventures. you could still feel the ambience of communism there. in the outskirt, halong bay is very beautiful, hoa lu and tam cuoc offer interesting scenery and experience. and in sapa, the cultures are so untouched that will amaze all tourists. you can do lots of trekking there.

ho chi minh - more developed and has lost it's vietnamese charms in many ways. however, it is rich in history, religion and offers sights of different ways of living. it offers far much better shopping selection than hanoi. ho chi minh is place for you to learn more about the american invasion, viet kong tunnels, etc. the city never seem to sleep. the nite life is far much better than hanoi. in the outskirts, you can visit the mekong delta to see how people live and tropical fruit farms. you may want to consider spending 2-3 days in muine at a nice beach resort.

fyi, hanoi is a four seasoned city whereas ho chi minh is very tropical - hot and very humid.
