Which hotel is better in Hanoi, Vietnam - the Sofitel Metropole or Intercontinental Westlake?

Intercontinental West Lake is a tremendous property, but because it's built over the lake - literally on pylons, you will be serenaded to sleep by the sound of frogs. Yup. No joke...you get used to them after a while.

Sofitel Metropole has a great location in the middle of downtown, but to be honest, its not worth the money. Sofitel Plaza (the old Meritus West Lake Hotel) is a better value.

If you're a single guy, go to the Fortuna Hotel on Lang Ha. They're a five star and have a Karaoke Bar downstairs which is legendary :)

Melia Hotel is also a great bargain 5-star.

In short, there are plenty to choose from. It all depends on what you're looking for.

Enjoy yourself here in Hanoi.

Izzy has it pretty good.

I myself would prefer the Metropole because I like downtown Hanoi. I used to live 5 minutes walk from the Intercon & the next-door Sheraton. It is a nice neighborhood, but nowhere near as interesting as the Metropole's location. There are lots of nice restaurants, etc., in the area of the Metropole. There are lots of restaurants out by the Intercon as well, but many of them are not used to catering to visiting foreigners.

The Intercon has nice dining - BUT!!! the two times I was there for dinner, if you looked out onto the water outside the dining room, you saw the garbage that had drifted in from the main lake. I mentioned this to the management as an issue that could put off diners who were recent arrivals to Hanoi, but I don't know if they did anything about it. I hope they did.

For my money, I prefer the smaller hotels downtown, both for the cost and for the locale. De Seloya, for one, is very popular with the expat community, and it is hard to get into.

In which criteria do you want to compare? the both hotels are very good and five star hotels. Sofitel Metropol Hanoi Hotel is an old french style hotel, it's located in the central area of Hanoi. Intercontinental Westlake Hanoi Hotel is a new one, located in the bank of West Lake (the largest lake in Hanoi), it has a very good view to the lake. So, it's much up to your interest.
I recommend Intercontinental West Lake Hanoi Hotel

Enjoy your staying in Hanoi, Vietnam
