Which is the best (cheap and good) travel agency in Hanoi, Vietnam, to book a 1-day tour to Halong Bay?

Visiting Hanoi next week and would like to book a day trip to Halong Bay (with junk/boat cruise). Looking for something that is good value (around US$20?) and pleasant (not too crowded).

Would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

Almost every hotel books tours and actual travel agents would barely by more than 50 metres apart. There are hundreds of them.

Be warned, some cheap trips to Halong Bay are just that... cheap.

A tourist couple I met in Hanoi, booked a tour that was to take them to and from Halong Bay, and then take a cruise. The brochure featured a Junk Style boat and also a luxury style coach.

What they got was a beaten up old bus, no air conditioning and running a freight service that caused the road journey to take around 4 hours each way with it's pick ups and deliveries. Instead of a Junk, they had a small wooden boat that was exposed and no roof or canopy over their heads, and motored out around just one island and then back to the port again. They say their boat cruise was maybe 40 minutes. Lunch was un-refridgerated chicken and rice and the beer was extra and warm. If I remember correctly they said it was like $30 each for that.

I suggest you play it safe and look at the recommendations from books like Lonely Planet and Fodors travel guides and take your pick there. Alternatively, when you are in Hanoi, seek out non-Vietnamese people that live there for up to date advice, where you can be fairly confident they are not getting a commission.

Alternatively, if you are staying in a popular hotel or guest house, ask the fellow travelers who have just returned from the bay and get their advice/recommendations.

US$20???? Where have you been? 20$????? Whattt? You need to get up there (and that is a LOT more than $20) and you need to get a boat booking.

Anyway, I know a taxi driver who is reliable, drives sanely, and I would recommend. But, alas, he will charge more that $20 just for the road fare - we paid a lot more than that when I was living in Hanoi last year!

E-mail me and I will send you his name and phone number. Or, keep to your pipe dream and see how things work out.
