Who has been to Vietnam?

Today I was at school and i don't know exactly how my friends and I got talking about Vietnam, but we decided that we were goingto try and learn Vietamese. I often decide that I am going to do something or be something but change my mind with in a few days. My school only teaches french, Spanish, and German...so this will be hard...Do you have any tips on learning Vietnamese(or any language for that matter)?
I think that if I know more about the country I might be more motivated to learn vietnamese...so anyone been there? Don't try and talk me out of this either...I only want possitive feedback...I don't think I can handel anything negative right now!

Who wants to know
I lived in Vietnam until I was22. Of course as a Vietnamese, there are so many positive things that I can talk about my country such as the people, culture and the landscape of Vietnam. Although we struggled for years because of the war against China, Japan, France, and the latest America, Vietnam never gave up. We fought to the last minute to preserve our independent.

Vietnam is a small country in South East Asia. We have our own culture and language. Unlike most countries in the far East, Vietnam uses alphabetical rather than characters as Chinese, Korean, Japan etc... The language is not hard to learn. However, it's can be confusing if you're not careful when using the accent because the word can have a total different meaning with or without the accent. There is a different levels in the family such as older brothers, sisters or younger brothers or sisters. The younger ones must respect the older ones. The older child also have more responsibilities to his/her family.

What sets Vietnam apart from other countries in the South East is that Vietnamese people are resilient, determine and discipline. To me, it's not easy to influence Vietnamese people We don't rely on anyone else to take care of us. We always take care of ourselves.

I hope you enjoy learning Vietnamese. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Yes, I was in Vietnam, and to who wants to know, the Americans were not fighting all of the Vietnamese only the communists from the north that had invaded the south.
Lots of Vietnamese in the south died during and after the war, while they were being re-educated.

Many of the people in the country suffered in a series of wars and conflicts.
The majority of the people are nice, friendly, and warm.
Learning about others culture and country is always a good thing to do.
You can get a CD and learn the language.
One is Transparent Language at www.transparent.com

Hmm, this is really interesting, and while I don't have too much advice, I do want to encourage you. That's awesome that this is something that you want to do, and don't let anyone stand in your way. I am 21 and in college, and basically just learned about the Vietnam war, because when I was in grade school and high school, they didn't teach about it yet. Read Yusef Komunyakaa's poem "Facing It." It is an awesome poem about Vietnam. Good luck!

Vietnam is a beautiful country and is destroying by communist party. Vietnamese didn't fight with American. US helped South Vietnam to fight communist in North Vietnam before 1975 (Vietnam war). South Vietnam collapsed on April 34, 1975. Communist party took over and and sent all soldiers and personnel who worked with America to prison camps.
They change Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City.
There are many documentary films about VN in US libraries now. You can check out and learn about it. Good luck.

I'm in the British school (year 7-grade 6) in Ho Chi Minh city and we learn Vietnamese,(and French, and Spanish) and i can tell you that it is a very exiting language to learn, and learning Vietnamese is also as important as learning Hindi and Mandarin, because it is just as likely we will need Vietnamese in later life. Vietnamese is not an easy language to learn, you must 'have your heart' in it and you must be determined before you jump into learning this language.

Good luck and hope you enjoy it!
