No RANT here!

My first question is who is "we"? A group of 5-6 could save a lot of money by getting a good travel book and planning their own trip. Vietnam is easy (and cheap) for travelers to navigate. Many travel agencies are "sub contractors" and don't organize their own tours. The government controls a lot of the tourist trade. Many upscale hotels are government owned. Check things out for yourself.

I've been there 5 times recently. Check the weather online. The rainy season varies from north to south. I recommend traveling Nov - Mar, its cooler. Places to consider: Sapa, Halong Bay, Hue, Hoian, Nha Trang, Dalat, Saigon and the Delta.

If you're adventurous, consider time in the Central Highlands. I took a motorbike trip down the "Ho Chi Minh Trail" in'03. Great scenery. Vastly different from coastal Vietnam.

I hire guides and book tours locally in country.

I'm a Vietnam Vet and have never had a problem in 5 trips. 2/3rds of the population is under 30. The war is history to them. I've found they prefer Americans to other tourists. Maybe we spend more $$. I try not to, tourist demand for items causes increased prices for Vietnamese. $680 annual per capita income.

Recommendation is very popular in the travel websites. I have read it on the web you gave and think it is very usefull. I have dealt with many tourists and most of them got recommendation from their friends other sources (Vietnam is something strange to outside world). However, please do not think that Vietnamese people hate Americans (they even do not hate American battle pilots in Vietnam war). They have quickly forgotten it unless someone stur it again.

Can't give you specifics other than talk to your travel agent. And why would anyone want to go back to a s........e like 'nam ?? All it does is rain and the people SUCK !!They Hate AMERICANS !!!
