Vietnam was the colony of the France, The french came first to Vietnam in 1858 and occupied in Vietnam nearly 100 years, until 1954 after the famous battle called Dien Bien Phu finished. During that time many Vietnamese people could speak french. Now, french is still spoken in Vietnam but just for working, Vietnamese is the mother language, the second language is English, in some fields people use french for working such as french companies in Vietnam, french speaking guides,...

Just a quick said: Vietnamese is the mother language, after that English (more and more popular and becoming the second language). French was spoken before but I don't think it's popular here now. Perhaps only foreign language students can speak French (just like the other languages if they learn).

French was spoken in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos because all of these countries were part of the French colonial empire from the latter part of the 1800’s up till 1954 when the result of the French/Indochina War ended French control over their Southeast Asian colonies. Many of the older Viets, such as my grandfather, spoke French fluently.
Language is not the only thing that France influenced in Vietnam. Architecture is perhaps the most noticeable French influence. Both Ha Noi and Sai Gon have numerous impressive French styled buildings that are still used today. Food was also influenced. You will see “French” bread baked and served as a common staple across Vietnam. What many don’t realize is how France influenced some parts of Vietnam’s landscape.
Da Lat is covered with pine trees that were introduced to the area by the French over a century ago. A drive through the windy mountain roads of the area will make you think you’re in a forest along the French Alps or the Rocky Mountains of the United States if you didn’t know better.
I hope this helps!
