Why does so many Vietnamese ppl have the surname Nguyen? |
Seriously, EVERY Vietnamese person I've ever met has had the surname Nguyen, not that there's anything wrong with that name but is there any reason why so many Vietnamese people have that name? |

Well I know that you are not trying to imply anything and I understand. Im vietnamese myself and nguyen is popular becuase either one, there was a nguyen dynasty that lasted for a long time and two theres probably a part in vietnam, a long time ago, where the nguyens were dominate and people took in the surname. there is probably a more better reason, but i hoped i helped. |

Throughout Vietnamese history, many events contributed to the name's prominence. In 1232, after usurping the Lý Dynasty, Trần Thủ Äá»™ forced the descendants of the Lý to change their surname to Nguyá»…n. When Hồ Quý Ly overturned the Trần Dynasty, he killed many of their descendants so when the Hồ Dynasty collapsed in 1407, many of his descendants changed their surname to Nguyá»…n in fear of retribution. In 1592, on the collapse of the Mạc Dynasty, their descendants changed their surname to Nguyá»…n and Lá»u. When the Nguyá»…n Dynasty (the descendants of the Nguyá»…n Lords) took power in 1802, some of the descendants of the Trịnh Lords fearing retribution changed their surname to Nguyá»…n, while others fled north into China. The Nguyá»…n Dynasty awarded many people the surname Nguyá»…n during their rule, and many criminals also changed their surname to Nguyá»…n to avoid prosecution. As with all other common surnames, most people having this surname are not necessarily related. |
